The year was 1999, Sonic Adventure was just release in Japan late 1998 and fans around the world would have to wait until late 1999 to play Sonic's latest video game. What was going on in the Sonic community at the time? Well in May of 1999, a Sonic fan known as Cyan Helkaraxe decided to mess around with the Sonic community and claim that he had a copy of Sonic 1 Beta. He contacted Simon Wai, the owner of the Sonic 2 Beta Page claiming he had a prototype of Sonic 1. Fans eagerly downloaded the rom and started playing it on their early Sega Genesis emulators. Eventually, Cyan would come out and confess that the rom he shared was indeed just a hoax... But it started a new hobby for Sonic fans! This was how Sonic Rom hacking came to be! The following video shows complete gameplay footage of the very first Sonic rom hack played by yours truly. This is the beginning of a new series I have started on Youtube and will continue to share my footage here on the blog as well. Feel free to give it a watch! The rom itself is in a link provided in the video's description.

It's that time of year again, the 2022 Sonic Hacking Contest has gone live. Hackers can start submitting their hacks to the website, for both the expo and the main contest. This year Sonic 3 A.I.R. modifications will be allowed in the contest for the first time as well, opening new opportunities for hackers who modify the game to showcase their work in the contest! Remember when entering your hacks to make sure it meets the quality checks listed on the site, otherwise your submissions may be deleted. You also need to submit footage of your hacks for the trailer as well. Also added this year, one click installs for 2D PC and 3D submitted mods! This will make it easier for everyone to try out these mods, and will hopefully eliminate any technical difficulties that may come from getting the mod loader set up. Your submissions must be added to the site no later than the end of September 4th, and updates will be allowed until the end of September 11th. The expo submission deadline is the end of September 25th, along with the contest trailer submission. The actual results week will be from October 10th to the 16th, during this time the media panel and some judges will be playing all the main contest submissions. During this week, the public is allowed to download and try out the hacks as well. If you're a hacker and want to submit your hacks to the contest, or if you just want to read about the contest check out the site here!

Just recently the Youtuber known as BalenaProductions has been dealing with Youtube marking their 13+ Sonic the Hedgehog animations for kids despite clearly stating at the beginning of each video that these animations are indeed not suitable for kids under the age of 13. Stephen Page, the owner of the channel has reached out to TeamYoutube over on Twitter numerous times in hopes to dispute each claim on his channel, only to lose said disputes. When a video is marked "Made for Kids", the video will automatically be demonetized and the creator will not earn a profit off the video. Not only that, but views plummet and no one can post comments on the video. Sadly BalenaProductions cannot move platforms, and will most likely end up retiring from making videos due to this issue. While some may argue that Sonic is targeted towards children, this still shouldn't be happening when these animations are not deemed suitable for children and are clearly stated as such. For those not familiar with BalenaProductions' work, they are famously known for "Christmas With Sonic", a fan favorite that ran from 2011-2020 that depicts the Blue Blur with his friends and Eggman during the Holidays. We can only hope that Stephen can get a break from Youtube and be able to get this issue resolved soon.

Yes you've read that title correctly, a brand new Sonic Retro member who goes by TrooperManiac recently uploaded the entire Sonic 3 and Knuckles soundtrack in a uncompressed, unprocessed form on Youtube. What this means is these are the clearest recordings of the soundtrack we've got, there's no muffled instruments like you'd get on real hardware. TrooperManiac mentioned that they've been working on this project for years, and explained how they did it, here's their direct quote: "Basically I took an oscilloscope and recorded the individual sine waves to painstakingly manually generate a Midi file containing all the notes of each tune. This was played back on a DAFM synth which was recorded using Creative Sound Blaster Z SE 5.1 & Audacity @ 88200hz." I have to applaud them for their hard work! You can listen to the entire soundtrack in the video below.
